What the specs mean

Bag listings usually state the leather and the measurements, and sometimes the strap drop and what fits inside. Compare those lines rather than the photo, which has nothing in it for scale.

Dimensions
Width, height and depth in centimetres are the only way to know whether a tote is a day bag or a shopper. Compare W x H x D; stores list them in different orders and some use inches.
Material
'Full-grain' and 'cowhide' leather age differently from 'PU' or 'vegan leather', and a '100% cotton' tote packs down. Look for the material line and the hardware finish; 'genuine leather' can be the lowest grade.
Strap drop
The drop (strap length from the top of the bag) decides whether it sits under the arm, on the hip or crossbody. Compare the drop in centimetres and whether the strap is adjustable or detachable.
Closure
A magnetic snap is quick; a zip keeps things in on a crowded tram. Check the closure line, and the pockets line for a zip pocket inside.
Capacity
Laptop bags state the screen size they fit, and that is the measurement that matters. Look for 'fits a 13-inch laptop' or an internal measurement rather than a litre figure.
