Jewellery & watches deals: what to know

Rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and watches from jewellers and fashion labels. Sterling silver and gold-plated pieces make up most of the deals; solid gold and gemstone pieces turn up in jeweller clearances.

Common searches: sterling silver necklace, hoop earrings, gold plated bracelet, ring, pendant, watch.

Before you buy

  • Check the metal: '925' is sterling silver, 'gold plated' or 'vermeil' is a coating over silver or brass that wears with use.
  • Ring sizes are quoted in Australian letters or US numbers; measure before buying as resizing is rarely free on sale items.
  • Jewellery and earrings in particular are often non-returnable for hygiene reasons.
  • Watches carry warranties from the brand, not the store; check the warranty is valid for grey-import stock.

What the specs mean

Jewellery copy states the metal and its plating, the stone, and a few millimetres of measurement. Those words decide whether a piece lasts a season or a decade, so read them before the price.

Metal
'Sterling silver', '9ct gold' and '18ct gold vermeil' (gold over sterling silver) are solid or thick; 'gold plated' over brass wears through. Compare the metal line exactly as written; a store that says only 'gold' or 'silver' has not told you what it is.
Finish
Rhodium plating stops silver tarnishing; vermeil thickness is quoted in microns by better labels. Look for the plating and its thickness where stated.
Stone
Cubic zirconia, crystal, lab-grown and natural stones differ by orders of magnitude in price. Check the stone line and, for diamonds, the carat weight and any certificate.
Size
Ring sizes in Australia are letters (K to T is typical), while US sizes are numbers 5–9; a '5' from a US-sized label is about an Australian J–K. Confirm which system the ring size uses and measure a ring you own; some bands run tight and say so.
Length
A 40 cm chain sits at the collarbone, 45 cm just below, and bracelets are sold at 17–19 cm. Compare the chain or bracelet length in centimetres with the pendant drop.
Dimensions
Earring and pendant sizes are quoted in millimetres and look larger in close-up photos. Compare width and length in millimetres with a coin: a 5 cent piece is 19 mm across.
Water resistance
Plated and crystal pieces say 'splash proof' or 'not for the ocean or pool' when they are not for swimming. Read the water line before wearing a piece to the beach.
