Men's clothing deals: what to know

Men's shirts, tees, chinos, jackets, workwear and suiting, plus grooming, from menswear stores and the men's ranges of fashion retailers. Workwear brands (King Gee, Hard Yakka, Bisley) run steady discounts; fashion labels clear at end of season.

Common searches: mens polo, chinos, mens jacket, work shirt, hi vis, mens tee.

Before you buy

  • Check the fit named in the listing (slim, regular, relaxed) and the size chart; a 'medium' spans several chest sizes between brands.
  • Workwear must meet AS/NZS 4602 to count as hi-vis for a worksite; fashion hi-vis does not.
  • Suiting sold separately (jacket and trousers) lets you mix sizes; check the fabric matches if you buy at different times.

What the specs mean

Men's listings in these feeds are mostly sold by letter size with the odd 40–44 chest or 30–36 waist, so the composition and fit lines carry the useful detail. Trade and flannel stores add care and origin.

Size
Letter sizes are not standardised; a Large at one label fits like a Medium at another, and shirt sizes in numbers are chest or collar measurements in centimetres or inches. Read which measurement a numbered size is, then compare it with the store's size chart.
Fit
'Slim', 'regular', 'relaxed' and 'oversized' change the chest and body length by several centimetres at the same size. Find the fit word and the model's height and size; stores that photograph a 178 cm model in a Large are telling you something.
Fabric
A flannel's weight and a tee's cotton blend decide warmth, shrinkage and how it holds its shape; percentages are the only reliable description. Look for the composition line ('95% cotton, 5% spandex') and the fabric weight in gsm where given.
Collar and sleeve
Collar style sets how formal a shirt reads, and sleeve length is the difference between a work shirt and a weekend one. Check the store's collar and sleeve words against the photo rather than the product name.
Made in
Australian-made workwear and boots are listed as such, and some stores say only 'imported'. Take 'Made in Australia' at face value; 'designed in Australia' says nothing about where it was sewn.
Care
Workwear and flannels are washed often, so the care line decides how long they last. Compare wash temperature and whether tumble drying or ironing is allowed.
