Shoes deals: what to know

Sneakers, boots, sandals, heels, flats and slides from Australian shoe retailers and sneaker stores, including the end-of-season clearances where whole size runs go. Shoes are the fashion deals most worth checking against the price history, because the RRP on sneakers is firm and the discount is real.

Common searches: sneakers, ankle boots, sandals, running shoes, slides, heels.

Before you buy

  • A sale price is only a deal if your size is in stock; clearance runs sell out of the common sizes first.
  • Sizing varies between brands and between men's, women's and unisex scales; check the size chart rather than assuming.
  • Sale shoes are often final sale or exchange-only, and worn soles void returns; try them indoors first.
  • Check whether the listing is for a pair or a single display shoe, which turns up on clearance sites.

What the specs mean

Shoe listings are the best described in this category: upper, lining, sole, heel height and fit come as plain lines. The catch is the size, which is EU, US or UK depending on the store, and is rarely labelled.

Size
Australian women's shoe sizes match US sizes and men's match UK sizes, but most boutiques here sell European sizes (35–42) and Reebok lists 'M 8 / W 9.5'. Work out which system the numbers belong to from the store's size guide before comparing; a 38 and an 8 are the same foot.
Upper
'Leather upper' and 'synthetic upper' are the difference between a shoe that breathes and stretches and one that does not. Look for the upper, lining and sole lines separately; 'leather' in the name can mean the lining only.
Heel height
Stores measure heels in centimetres or millimetres, and tags such as 'Over 8cm' are their own filter bands. Compare the measured heel and any platform; a 9 cm heel with a 2 cm platform pitches the foot like a 7 cm one.
Fit
Shoe fit is stated as a width (B is standard, C and D wider) or as 'true to size', 'runs small'. Check the fit line and the model name's width letter (an XF or XW suffix at some brands).
Sole
A leather sole slips when new and wears faster; rubber and EVA soles grip and cushion. Look for the outsole material and, for boots, the shaft height and circumference.
Made in
Italian, Spanish and Portuguese-made shoes are listed with pride; others say nothing. Read the country line as stated; it is not shown unless the store wrote it.
