Swimwear deals: what to know

Swimsuits, bikinis, boardshorts, rashies and beachwear, from swimwear labels and surf stores. Prices peak in November and clear from February; the best buys are end-of-summer runs if your size is still there.

Before you buy

  • Swimwear is non-returnable once the hygiene liner is removed, so check the size chart and the cut (a 'cheeky' bottom is cut high).
  • UPF 50+ rashies and swim shirts are rated for sun protection; plain lycra is not.
  • Chlorine-resistant fabric (often sold for lap swimming) lasts longer in pools; standard swimwear is for the beach.

What the specs mean

Swimwear listings are short on specification, so the sun protection rating, lining and fabric are the lines worth finding. Kaftans and cover-ups in this section are sold by Australian dress size ranges.

Sun protection
A UPF rating under the Australian standard is a tested figure: 50+ blocks all but a fiftieth of UV. Look for a UPF number on rash vests and swim shirts; untested swimwear states none.
Fabric
Nylon-elastane and recycled nylon stretch and recover; chlorine-resistant polyester lasts longer in pools. Compare the composition line and any chlorine-resistance claim.
Lining
A lined swimsuit is opaque when wet; an unlined one may not be. Check for 'fully lined' or a lining composition.
Size
Bikini tops and bottoms are often sold separately, and kaftans come in ranges such as 'AU 12-20'. Read each piece's size and the sizing system named with it.
Cup and coverage
Underwire, removable padding and the bottom's coverage decide support and modesty. Look for the cup, wire and coverage lines rather than the styling photos.
Length
Kaftans and cover-ups are described by length in centimetres or inches, measured on one size. Compare the stated length with the model's height.
