Skincare deals: what to know
Cleansers, serums, moisturisers, sunscreen, masks and tanning products, from skincare brands, pharmacies and beauty retailers. Skincare discounts are steady rather than deep; the best are on bundles and on sunscreen before summer.
Common searches: sunscreen spf 50, vitamin c serum, moisturiser, retinol, cleanser, self tan.
Before you buy
- Sunscreen sold in Australia must be TGA-listed; check the SPF and the expiry, as sunscreen degrades.
- Actives such as retinol and acids are sold at different strengths; start low if you have not used them.
- Skincare is non-returnable once opened, so sample sizes and discovery sets are a cheap way to test a brand.

What the specs mean
Skincare listings carry the most claims of any category, and the few hard facts are size, the stated strength of an active, the skin type it is sold for and, for sunscreen, the SPF as regulated in Australia. The claims are the listing's words, shown with their source, not ours.
- Size per dollar
- Serums are sold in 10, 15, 30 and 50 mL and a mini can cost more per millilitre than the full size. Compare the millilitres or grams in the title against the price; 'mini', 'travel' and 'deluxe sample' are small.
- Stated strength
- A percentage in the name (2% hyaluronic acid, 0.5% retinol, 22% niacinamide) is the one concentration a listing states outright. Compare the stated percentage of the same active; a product that names no percentage states none.
- SPF and broad spectrum
- In Australia, SPF 50+ is the highest claim allowed, sunscreens are tested to AS/NZS 2604 and regulated by the TGA, and a moisturiser with SPF 15 or less may be sold as a cosmetic instead. Look for the SPF, 'broad spectrum' and an AUST L number on a sunscreen; apply it at the labelled amount, which is more than most people use.
- Skin type
- Stores file products by the skin type they are sold for, which is the honest version of 'suitable for everyone'. Compare the skin type and concern the store lists (dry, oily, combination, sensitive) with your own.
- Ingredients list
- Australian cosmetics must carry a full ingredients list in descending order; 'key ingredients' in a listing is a highlight, not the list. Check the pack or the brand's site for the full list if you react to fragrance, essential oils or alcohol.
- Expiry and packaging
- Clearance skincare can be short-dated or sold in a damaged box, which the better retailers say in the title. Look for 'Exp.', 'short expiry' or 'damaged box' in the listing; the product inside is new, the date is what you are buying.
- Listed claims
- 'Vegan', 'cruelty-free', 'fragrance-free' and 'dermatologically tested' are the maker's claims and are not certified by any Australian scheme. Read them as claims from the listing; a third-party logo on the pack (such as a cruelty-free certification) is the stronger evidence.
