Lighting deals: what to know

Floor, table and pendant lamps, ceiling lights, fans with lights, LED strips and globes, from lighting specialists and furniture stores. Designer-look pendants are the most common sale item.

Common searches: floor lamp, pendant light, ceiling fan with light, table lamp, led strip, outdoor wall light.

Before you buy

  • Hardwired fittings (pendants, ceiling lights, fans) must be installed by a licensed electrician in Australia; include that cost.
  • Check the globe type (E27, B22, GU10) and whether globes are included; designer pendants often come without one.
  • Look for the Australian RCM mark; imported lamps without it may not be legal to sell here.
  • Colour temperature matters: 2700K is warm and homely, 4000K is cool and office-like; many cheap LEDs are only sold in cool white.

What the specs mean

Light output, colour and fitting details determine whether a light suits the room. Read the LED and fitting specifications together.

Brightness
Watts measure electricity use, not how much light you get. Compare lumens for lamps serving the same purpose.
Colour temperature
Kelvin describes whether white light looks warm or cool. Around 2700 K is warm white; compare the listed Kelvin value.
Colour rendering
Colour rendering describes how accurately colours appear. Compare CRI values; a higher figure indicates closer colour rendition.
Fitting and base
A globe must match its socket. Look for the exact base, such as E27, B22 or GU10.
Dimmability
Not every LED works with every dimmer. Check the lamp and dimmer compatibility lists.
IP rating
Water exposure affects where a fitting can be placed. Compare the maker's stated bathroom or outdoor zone suitability and IP code.
Electrical compliance
Electrical fittings sold in Australia must meet applicable requirements. Look for the RCM marking on applicable electrical equipment.
