Camping & hiking deals: what to know

Tents, swags, sleeping bags, mats, packs, hiking boots, camp cooking, lighting and portable fridges, from Australian camping and hiking stores. Camping gear discounts before Easter and the school holidays, and hiking clothing clears at the end of each season.

Common searches: tent, sleeping bag, hiking boots, camp chair, portable fridge, hiking backpack.

Before you buy

  • Tents are rated by how many people they sleep lying shoulder to shoulder; a '4-person' tent suits two adults with gear.
  • Sleeping bags carry a comfort rating in degrees; buy for the coldest night you expect, not the average.
  • Hiking boots need a break-in period; buy a half size up for descents and try them with your hiking socks.
  • Portable fridges and power stations are the dearest items here; check the capacity in litres or watt-hours and the warranty.

What the specs mean

Camping gear is the best-specified corner of this category: tent and pack makers state packed size, weight, capacity and fabric denier, and sleeping bags carry ISO temperature ratings. The gaps are chairs and accessories, where only a load rating or a frame material tends to be given.

Sleeps
A tent's person rating assumes campers packed shoulder to shoulder with no gear inside. Compare the floor dimensions in centimetres and the standing height, and allow one person fewer than the rating for comfort.
Waterhead rating
The fly and floor are rated in millimetres of hydrostatic head; a floor takes more pressure than a fly. Look for at least 1,500 mm on the fly and 3,000 mm on the floor, stated separately.
Fabric denier
Denier describes thread thickness: 70D nylon is light and packable, 600D polyester is heavy and abrasion resistant. Compare the denier of the fly, floor and pack body, and note ripstop or silicone (sil-nylon) treatments.
Temperature ratings
ISO 23537 sleeping bags state comfort, limit and extreme temperatures; the comfort figure is the one to plan on, and extreme is survival only. Compare the comfort rating in °C for the coldest night you expect, and check the fill (down fill power, or synthetic weight in g/m²).
R-value
A sleeping mat's R-value (ASTM F3340) says how much ground cold it blocks; the number adds up when mats are stacked. Compare R-values: about 2 for summer, 3 to 4 for three seasons, 5 and over for snow.
Packed weight and size
What you carry is the packed weight, and a car camper's gear must still fit the boot. Compare packed weight in kilograms and packed dimensions in centimetres, not the pitched size.
Capacity
Packs, coolers and fridges are sold by litres; a day pack is 20 to 30 L, an overnight pack 40 to 60 L, a week's pack 60 L and up. Compare the litres and, for a fridge, the compressor's 12 V and 240 V draw.
Load rating
Chairs and stretchers state a maximum user weight, and the figure varies widely between models that look alike. Compare the rated load in kilograms and the frame material and tube size.
