Cycling deals: what to know

Bikes, e-bikes, components, tyres, helmets, cycling clothing and accessories from Australian bike shops. Bike shops clear last year's models when the new ones land (usually spring), and parts discount in the quiet winter months.

Common searches: road bike, e-bike, mountain bike, bike helmet, cycling jersey, bike tyres.

Before you buy

  • Check the frame size against your height and the brand's geometry chart; bike shops rarely take back a wrongly sized bike.
  • A sale bike may be a prior model year with older components; compare the groupset and wheels, not just the name.
  • Bikes ship partly assembled and some stores charge a build fee; pick-up from the shop is usually free and includes a fit.
  • Helmets sold in Australia must meet AS/NZS 2063; a cheap overseas helmet may not.
  • E-bikes for public roads must be under 250W (pedal assist) or 200W (throttle); anything more powerful is for private property only.

What the specs mean

Bike shops list a frame size and a wheel size, and little else in a form you can compare, so read the build line for the groupset and brakes before the price. For an e-bike, the motor and battery lines decide range and whether it is road-legal.

Frame size
Brands size the same frame as S/M/L, in centimetres or by rider height, and a wrong size cannot be fixed with a seatpost. Compare the maker's size chart for your height and inseam, not the letter alone; a listing that gives only one size is one variant.
Wheel size
Tyres, tubes and mudguards must match the wheel, and kids' bikes are sold by it. Look for 700c (road), 29" or 27.5" (mountain) and 12" to 24" for children's bikes, with the tyre width in inches or millimetres.
Drivetrain
The number of gears and the groupset name set the gear range and what spare parts cost. Compare 1x12 or 2x11 style gearing and the groupset named in the build line (Shimano Deore, SRAM GX, Shimano 105).
Brakes
Hydraulic disc brakes stop better in the wet than rim or mechanical disc brakes but cost more to service. Look for hydraulic disc, mechanical disc or rim (V-brake) in the build line and the rotor size in millimetres.
Motor and battery
An e-bike sold for the road here is either a 200 W power-assisted pedal cycle or an EN 15194 pedalec with up to 250 W continuous rated power and assistance that cuts out at 25 km/h; the battery's watt-hours set the range. Compare the motor's rated watts and newton-metres, the battery in Wh, the stated range in kilometres and the charge time in hours.
Weight
A kilogram matters on a bike you carry up stairs or lift onto a rack, and bike shops weigh by frame size. Compare the kilograms for the size you would buy; a weight quoted for a size 42 shoe or a medium frame is not yours.
Helmet and lights
A helmet sold here must meet the mandatory standard (AS/NZS 2063, or EN 1078, CPSC 1203, ASTM F1447 or Snell B-95), the road rules require an approved helmet, and at night a bike needs a white front light and red rear light visible from 200 metres. Look for the standard named on the helmet's listing, and lumens with a run time in hours for a light.
