Fishing, hunting & archery deals: what to know

Rods, reels, lures, line and fly gear, plus hunting clothing, optics and archery, from tackle and outdoor specialists. Fishing gear discounts at EOFY and after summer; hunting and camo clothing is cleared at the end of each season.

Common searches: fishing rod, spinning reel, fly rod, soft plastics, braid line, binoculars.

Before you buy

  • Match the rod and reel to the fishing: line weight, lure weight and action are listed for a reason.
  • Check whether a rod ships as one piece; long rods cost more to post and some are pick-up only.
  • Hunting and archery equipment has state rules on sale and use; the store will ask for details where the law requires.
  • Fly-fishing gear is sold by line weight (a 5wt rod takes 5wt line); mixing weights spoils the cast.

What the specs mean

Tackle is sold by numbers that only mean something together: a rod's line rating and cast weight, a reel's drag and line capacity, a line's breaking strain. Tackle shops often write each variant's figures in turn, so check that the numbers you read belong to the size in the cart.

Rod length and line weight
A fly rod's weight number (3 wt to 12 wt) and a spin rod's line class in pounds decide what it casts and what it can land; length in feet sets casting distance and how it travels. Compare the weight or line rating, the length in feet, and the number of pieces it breaks down into.
Cast weight
A lure outside the rod's cast weight range loads it badly or risks the tip. Compare the rod's cast weight in grams with the weight of the lures you fish.
Breaking strain
Line is sold by breaking strain in pounds or kilograms, and braid is far thinner than mono of the same strain. Compare pounds or kilograms, the diameter in millimetres and the spool length in metres; a listing that states several strains is listing several variants.
Drag and gear ratio
A reel's maximum drag in kilograms sets the fish it can stop; the gear ratio sets how fast it retrieves. Compare max drag in kg, gear ratio (such as 5.2:1), ball bearing count and line capacity (metres of a stated strain).
Lure size and weight
Hard-body and soft-plastic lures are listed by length and weight, which must suit the species and the rod. Compare length in millimetres, weight in grams, swimming depth in metres and how many come in the pack.
Hook size
Hook sizes run two ways: #1 is larger than #8, and 1/0 to 10/0 (the aughts) are larger again. Compare the # or /0 size and the pattern (circle, treble, jig head) rather than the photo.
Draw weight and length
A bow's draw weight in pounds and draw length in inches must fit the archer; too heavy a draw is unsafe and inaccurate. Compare the draw weight range in lb, the draw length in inches and the arrow spine the maker recommends for it.
Waders and clothing
Breathable waders suit warm Australian rivers; neoprene suits cold water. Fishing shirts are sold by UPF. Compare the fabric (breathable or neoprene thickness in mm), stocking or boot foot, and a UPF rating of 30 or 50+.
