Gym & fitness equipment deals: what to know

Dumbbells, kettlebells, benches, racks, cardio machines, resistance bands, boxing and martial arts gear, and recovery tools. Home gym equipment is bulky, so freight is the hidden cost; the deals cluster around January and EOFY.

Common searches: adjustable dumbbells, kettlebell, weight bench, treadmill, resistance bands, boxing gloves.

Before you buy

  • Weight equipment is priced by the kilo; check whether plates or a bar are included with a bench or rack.
  • Freight on heavy gear can equal the discount; check the delivered price and whether it includes carrying it inside.
  • Treadmills and bikes need the floor space and a power point; check the folded and unfolded dimensions.
  • Boxing gloves are sized by ounces for the user's weight and use (bag work versus sparring); mouthguards and gloves are non-returnable once used.

What the specs mean

Weights are the simplest specs on the site: kilograms are kilograms. Machines and benches are where to read carefully, for the maximum user weight, the footprint and the motor rating, and combat-sport gear is sold in ounces and by sleeve length.

Weight
Dumbbells, kettlebells and plates are sold by kilogram; adjustable sets state a range. Compare the kilograms per piece or pair, and for a set the number of plates and the bar weight (an Olympic bar is 20 kg, a women's bar 15 kg).
Bar and plate fit
Olympic plates have 50 mm holes and standard plates 25 to 30 mm; they do not mix. Look for the hole size or sleeve diameter in millimetres before buying plates for a bar you own.
Maximum user weight
Benches, racks, treadmills and bikes state a rated load, and it is often lower than you would guess. Compare the rated load in kilograms with your weight plus the bar and plates.
Footprint and height
A treadmill on incline and a rack with a pull-up bar need more ceiling than the room has. Compare assembled dimensions, folded dimensions and the height at full incline or with the bar fitted.
Resistance
Magnetic and air resistance feel different and are rated differently; bands are sold by resistance in kilograms. Compare the number of resistance levels, the type, and for bands the kilogram range.
Motor
A treadmill's continuous horsepower rating matters more than its peak, and it runs off an ordinary 10 A outlet. Compare continuous (CHP) rather than peak horsepower, the top speed in km/h and the maximum incline.
Glove weight and sleeve
Boxing gloves are sold in ounces (10 to 16 oz) by use and body weight; rashguards come in long and short sleeves. Compare the ounce weight and closure, and the sleeve option on grappling wear.
