Kids' clothing & shoes deals: what to know

Baby, toddler and kids' clothing and shoes, from Australian children's labels and outlet stores. Kids' boutiques turn over ranges fast, so a 30 to 50 per cent end-of-season markdown is normal and the price history shows which labels discount further.

Common searches: baby romper, kids pyjamas, toddler shoes, girls dress, boys shorts, school shoes.

Before you buy

  • Sizes are by age but children vary; check the garment length and chest measurements if the store lists them.
  • Buy a size up for growth on outerwear and pyjamas, but true to size for shoes: too-big shoes cause trips.
  • Kids' sleepwear in Australia must carry a fire-hazard label (low or high fire danger); check it on nightwear.

What the specs mean

Children's sizes in Australia are a code, not a measurement, and brands disagree about them. The listing's own size chart, fabric composition, care line and any fire or sun-protection label are what to compare.

Size
Most Australian baby brands run 0000 (newborn), 000 (0 to 3 months), 00 (3 to 6), 0 (6 to 12), 1 (12 to 18) and 2 (18 to 24 months), then whole numbers by age, but a size 2 at one brand is a 3 at another. Check the brand's own chart by height and weight rather than age, read any note that a style runs small or large, and for shoes compare EU, UK and foot length in centimetres.
Fabric composition
The fibre decides how a garment feels, washes and wears: organic cotton, bamboo viscose, merino and polyester blends all behave differently against skin and in the dryer. Read the percentage composition and, where there is one, the separate lining or outer fabric line.
Nightwear fire label
Children's pyjamas, nightdresses, dressing gowns and sleeved all-in-ones in sizes 00 to 14 must carry an Australian fire-hazard label; close-fitting low-hazard styles carry the caution, loose ones the warning. Look for 'CAUTION: Keep away from heat and flame' or 'WARNING: High fire danger. Keep away from heat and flame' on sleepwear.
Sun protection
Swimwear, rash vests and sun hats are often rated UPF 50+; the rating is for the fabric, and only where the listing states it. Compare the stated UPF rating and whether the rating covers the whole garment or just the shell.
Fit and closures
Press studs at the crotch, a two-way zip and envelope necks are what make a baby garment usable at 3 am; a toddler's own dressing needs elastic waists and no fiddly buttons. Read the listing's fit note (true to size, relaxed, slim) and the closure details.
Care
Baby clothes are washed daily; a cold gentle wash and no tumble dry is a real cost in time. Compare the stated washing instructions and whether the garment can be tumble dried.
Shoes
First shoes should be soft-soled and flexible, and children's shoes are sized in EU numbers here more often than Australian ones. Compare the stated EU size, the sole type (soft sole, pre-walker, rubber) and the inner length in centimetres where given.
