Running deals: what to know

Running shoes, apparel, watches, hydration gear and nutrition, from running specialists and sports stores. The previous version of a shoe is the regular bargain: it drops 30 to 40 per cent when the new one lands.

Common searches: running shoes, trail running shoes, gps running watch, running shorts, hydration vest, energy gels.

Before you buy

  • Running shoes fit smaller than casual shoes; most runners go a half size up, and some models come in wide fittings.
  • The previous model of a shoe is usually the same shoe with new colours; check the model number and version.
  • Carbon-plate race shoes last a few hundred kilometres, less than daily trainers; price them per run if that is how you will use them.

What the specs mean

Running shoes carry more comparable numbers than other footwear, drop, stack and weight among them, but only a few sports stores print them. Sizing is US-based and widths are a real option, so the size chart is as important as the specs.

Size and width
Running shoes are sold in US sizes that run differently by brand, and widths (D, 2E, 4E) change the fit more than a half size. Compare the US size against the brand's centimetre chart and look for a width option if you need one.
Heel-to-toe drop
Drop in millimetres changes how the shoe loads the calf and Achilles; moving more than 4 mm at once is a common cause of niggles. Compare the drop (0 to 12 mm) with the shoe you run in now.
Stack height
Stack in millimetres describes how much foam is underfoot; high stacks cushion long runs, low stacks suit speed and trails. Compare heel and forefoot stack in millimetres, and whether a plate is listed.
Support type
Neutral and stability shoes suit different feet; a stability shoe adds a firmer medial side. Look for neutral, stability or motion control, and the maker's pronation guidance.
Weight
Shoe weight is quoted per shoe, usually for a men's US 9, and a lighter shoe is usually a less durable one. Compare grams per shoe at the same reference size.
Upper and outsole
An engineered mesh upper breathes; a trail shoe's outsole lugs grip dirt but wear fast on road. Compare the upper material, the outsole rubber and lug depth in millimetres.
